20KW Ground Source Heat Pump Water to Water

Sep. 09, 2026

Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), also commonly referred to as a geothermal heat pump, is a highly efficient heating and cooling system that transfers heat to or from the ground. It utilizes the earth's relatively constant underground temperature as a heat source in the winter and a heat sink in the summer.
Key Vocabulary & Components
  • Horizontal Loop System: Pipes are buried in shallow trenches across a wide area of land.

  • Vertical Loop System: Pipes are inserted deep into vertical boreholes, ideal for limited land space.

  • Open-Loop System: Utilizes groundwater directly from a well as the heat exchange fluid.

  • Closed-Loop System: Recirculates a water-antifreeze solution through a sealed network of pipes.

  • Coefficient of Performance (COP): The ratio of heating or cooling provided to the energy consumed, reflecting its high efficiency.

    FAQ
F:How Does a Ground Source Heat Pump Work? (The Core Principle)
A:At its core, a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) does not create heat through combustion or direct electrical resistance. Instead, it acts as a "heat mover" or "energy transporter." By consuming a small amount of electricity, it transfers naturally occurring thermal energy between the building and the earth.
F:What is a "Water-to-Water" Ground Source Heat Pump?
A :Water-to-Water system means that water (or a water-antifreeze mix) is used on both sides of the heat pump. It absorbs heat from the ground water loop and transfers it to an indoor water loop. This indoor water loop is perfectly designed to run radiant underfloor heating, radiators, fan coil units, or to provide domestic hot water.
F:What is the lifespan of a Geothermal Heat Pump system?
A:Geothermal systems are incredibly long-lasting because their most critical components are protected from harsh weather:

The indoor heat pump unit typically lasts 20 to 25 years (compared to 10–15 years for standard air conditioners).

The underground loop pipes (made of high-density polyethylene) are exceptionally durable and carry a lifespan of 50 to 100 years.

F:Can a GSHP system provide both heating and cooling at the same time?

A: Standard systems alternate between heating and cooling seasons using a reversing valve. However, advanced Water-to-Water models can be configured to provide simultaneous heating and cooling—for example, cooling your living spaces while utilizing the waste heat to provide free domestic hot water or heat a swimming pool.
